ILO (2023). Generative AI and Jobs: A Global Analysis of Potential Effects on Job Quantity and Quality. Working Paper 96.
This study examines the potential impact of Generative AI, particularly Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPTs), on global employment. It finds that clerical work is the most exposed occupation, with 24% of tasks highly exposed and 58% moderately exposed. Other occupational groups show minimal high exposure (1-4% of tasks). The primary effect of GPTs is likely to augment work by automating specific tasks within occupations rather than fully replacing jobs. The study highlights disparities across income groups, with high-income countries facing higher automation exposure (5.5% of employment) compared to low-income countries (0.4%). The analysis underscores the need for proactive policies to manage transitions and address job quality implications.
