An artist’s work is driven by passion not necessity, so the theory goes. But does that mean artists should not have the same expectations of pay, security and conditions as any other worker? Precarity and low pay – even lack of payment – are common problems across the art world. And due to the nature of the work and structure of the sectors, collective action and struggle can be challenging. With the current health crisis placing more pressure than ever on the cultural industries, this debate will ask the questions: what kind of conditions do artists face in today’s world of work and how can they attempt to change them?
